“Beg Borrow Steal” is an immersive publication that celebrates the deepconnection between South Asian immigrants and their culture in the United Kingdom. Through poignant interviews and heartfelt recipes, it unveils the challenges and triumphs faced by people of colour in a predominantly white society. Each cherished recipe is typeset in the way they learned to cook and is presented alongside their personal stories. The book honours the resilience and perseverance of those who endured centuries of British colonialism. It goes beyond a cookbook, offering a comprehensive directory of South Asian stores and serving as an archive of art and design traditions, showcasing the intricate patterns found on the packaging.
Inspired by the stories from the interviews, a digital campaign was born. This concept had the potential beyond just a singular publication but to become an entity in itself where it can use a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle racial inequality and ignorance. Thus, the campaign “Beg Borrow Steal: Tackling colonial amnesia and reviving South Asian culture”.
